A Brief History

The award winning Kanawha Valley Pipes and Drums (KVP&D) is one of the premier Pipe and Drum Corps in West Virginia.  The band has been performing Scottish and Irish music for over 25 years, first as the 130th Highlanders associated with the West Virginia Air National Guard in Charleston, West Virginia, and then changing in 1988 to the Kanawha Valley Pipes and Drums.  Over the years the band and members have performed throughout the United States and abroad.

The purpose of this non-profit organization is to preserve the tradition of highland piping and drumming.  This is accomplished through public and private performances as well as by providing instruction on the pipes and drums.  With well over 100 years of combined piping and drumming experience, KVP&D is known for spreading the grand heritage of Scottish and Irish culture throughout the region.

KVP&D is the only Eastern United States Pipe Band Association (EUSPBA) sanctioned pipe band in West Virginia and participates in piping and drumming competitions throughout the Eastern United States.  In addition, the band regularly performs concerts, and participates in parades, festivals, and special events.

The band wears the tartan of the Black Watch.  The Black Watch tartan is still used today by the British Military Black Watch Regiment.  This Scottish military regiment was formed in the 1700’s under the command of Field Marshall George Wade for policing the Scottish Highlands and keeping order following the Battle of Culloden.  The Black Watch tartan brought members from many different clans together under one tartan and cause.  KVP&D membership is diverse and spans many walks of life coming together and proudly wearing this tartan with the common interest of highland piping and drumming.
